Pep Guardiola has admitted to making an exaggerated statement when he previously referred to Matheus Nunes as "one of the best players in the world."
This declaration came immediately after Manchester City's impressive 5-0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of the round of 16 clash during the 2021/22 Champions League season.
At that time, Nunes was still playing for the Portuguese club.
However, Guardiola has now clarified his stance, acknowledging that Nunes has not yet reached the status of being among the world's best players but still recognising him as an "exceptional player."
Speaking to reporters, Guardiola took back his previous statement, saying, "Maybe I overexaggerated a little bit. He's not. He is a really good player but sometimes, maybe I said this comment after 1-5, it was 5-0? But he's an exceptional player."
Manchester City secured Nunes' services for £52 million from Wolves on transfer deadline day. The Portuguese midfielder made the move after just one season with Wolves.
Nunes has participated in three matches for his new club this season and recently earned his first start against Nottingham Forest, also registering one assist.
With a flawless record this season, Guardiola's team is set to face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
