Former Ghana striker Augustine Ahinful has made recommendations to deal with the decay and corruption that have eaten into the fabric of Ghana football.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Ahinful urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to scrap the practice of appointing club coaches to manage national teams simultaneously.

He believes that coaches playing this couple are likely to be distracted and often face a conflict of interest, particularly during the scouting of players for the national teams.

“National team coaches must not be allowed to coach club sides. If we allow that, I am sorry to say that corruption will rise in our game

If a coach is handling a club side and he is tasked to announce a squad, how will he be able to go around and scout for the right players?”

To deal with this, the former striker called on the government and the GFA to employ coaches who manage only one team—either at the national or club level.

“This system will not work, and so the government and the GFA must work on this to solve the situation. The GFA must be able to employ coaches and pay them every month as they work for the various national teams, but the system where a coach is coaching a club and will have to leave his team and come to a national team camp is not the best,” Ahinful added.

Meanwhile, corruption in Ghana football has been a long-standing issue with allegations of bribery, match fixing, embezzlement of funds and several other mismanagement affecting the sport.
