Ghana’s national soccer team has faced significant challenges in recent times, failing to advance beyond the group stage in both the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments held in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively.

The team’s fortunes took a further hit under coach Otto Addo, as they were unable to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON. This marks the first time in twenty years that Ghana has not qualified for the prestigious continental competition.

The four-time African champions experienced a disheartening qualification campaign, managing only three draws and suffering three defeats, leaving them at the bottom of their group with a mere three points.

During a visit to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, February 14, by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, Otumfuo expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s poor results.

He stressed the importance of making changes to the technical team to regain the squad’s competitive edge.

“The Black Stars is now a disgrace,” he said. “Get the team a good technical team to man it.

“It is not in good form currently, breaking people’s hearts always. They exited the last tournament quite earlier than expected.”

Otumfuo also stressed the importance of selecting dedicated and deserving players for the national team.

“The right players must be called in. I have told them at Kotoko that good players must be allowed to play not those with some form of affiliation.”

Despite missing out on AFCON 2025, the Black Stars will soon regroup for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they will face Chad and Madagascar in Matchday five and six fixtures.
