Caoimhín Kelleher joins Brentford from Liverpool in £18m deal

Liverpool's goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher has joined Brentford in a deal worth £18 million ($24.2m).

Caoimhín Kelleher cemented his reputation at Liverpool as a second-choice goalkeeper, an immediate backup for the club's first-choice keeper, Alisson Becker.

However, it is reported that he has moved to Brentford as a first-choice keeper to replace Brentford's Mark Flekken, who has completed a €10m (£8.4m) transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

The 26-year-old Irishman joined Liverpool's academy in 2015, after which he made his senior debut with Liverpool on September 25, 2019, in an EFL Cup match against Milton Keynes Dons.

He kept a clean sheet as Liverpool won 2-0. Caoimhín Kelleher, after growing through Liverpool's academy, signed a deal with them in 2019, for a duration that is currently unknown, until he extended it by 5 years in 2021.

The contract, which is expected to expire by the close June 2026, has now been terminated.

According to reports, Anfield will welcome a new keeper from Valencia, Giorgi Mamardashvili, who agreed to a £29m move to Merseyside last summer.

Kelleher has repeatedly cited his desire for more game time, telling Optus Sport last month, "I think I've said it before as well that I feel like I'm a number one, and I feel like I'm good enough to play week in, week out. That's what I'm looking to do.

"Obviously, this season I was lucky enough to play a lot of games … But yeah, it's definitely something I'm looking at."

Caoimhín Kelleher has had an impressive stint at Anfield with 24 clean sheets and seven major trophies, including two Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup, two League Cups, and one UEFA Super Cup.

Also, with 25 appearances in the Premier League, matches, he has secured 8 clean sheets and made 73 saves.

He also saved one penalty and had 133 throw-outs throughout his league career. His win rate of 65.7% in all competitions is the highest of any Liverpool goalkeeper with 50+ appearances in the club’s history.
