Abedi Pele’s remarkable header from the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has resurfaced online after Mikel Merino scored a similar goal in Arsenal’s victory over Chelsea on Sunday, March 17, 2025.
Abedi’s goal was a crucial equalizer for Ghana in their semi-final match against Nigeria 33 years ago. The African football icon skillfully directed a corner kick into the far post from a tight angle, leveling the score.
A video of the goal was shared on X (formerly Twitter) after frustrated Chelsea fans complained about conceding a nearly identical goal against Arsenal in the London Derby.
In that match, Merino connected with Martin Ødegaard’s corner to score the winning goal at the Emirates Stadium, securing Arsenal’s triumph.
Many fans blamed Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, for poor positioning, calling it a ‘cheap’ goal. A disappointed Chelsea fan, using the handle @hasanalnaqour, voiced his frustration on X.
"How can you concede that!!!!," he wrote as captain for the video of Merino's header.
