Ghanaian actress Joselyn Dumas has delved into the hurdles that single mothers encounter when re-entering the dating scene.
On her YouTube channel, Dumas shared a story about a friend's reluctance to date a woman with a child. The friend expressed concerns about taking on parental responsibilities for a non-biological child, illustrating a prevalent bias that contributes to the difficulty single mothers face in finding romantic partners.
“We have our kids as single mothers but we still want to be happy. We still want to date other people.
“Let me tell you why we don't go out and marry. I spoke to a friend of mine here, Anthony. He said, ‘Me, I will never be with a born one’.
"His reason was, ‘Why would I come and raise somebody else's child? That's not my bloodline. He doesn't have any trace of my DNA in him. Why am I going to now help someone's bloodline grow? What about mine?’
“And I said to myself that this is the reason why a lot of single mothers are single with their children,” he said.Dumas argued against this mindset, emphasising that single mothers, like everyone else, seek happiness and companionship. She challenged the perception that caring for a non-biological child, whether through adoption or otherwise, should be fundamentally different."I asked him, ‘What about adoption?’ And he said that's different. But if you ask me, it's not that different,” she said. The actress shed light on the sacrifices single mothers make out of necessity rather than a desire to remain single, highlighting the resilience and determination often exhibited by these women.
"You can raise the child on your own. It's a sacrifice you've also made as a woman. Regardless of what it is, you are going to have this child and you're going to raise this child. It's not because we want to be single,” she said.
