The Oti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gabriel Lembue, has expressed concerns about the potential implications of Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong winning the New Patriotic Party's presidential primaries.
He believes that if Agyapong emerges as the NPP's presidential candidate, it would pose a significant challenge for the opposition party in the 2024 general elections.
Lembue emphasized that Agyapong represents hope for many young people, who see him as a figure similar to the NDC's late founder, Jerry John Rawlings, who is credited with bringing positive changes to the country. Therefore, Lembue has openly voiced his preference for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's success in the ongoing NPP presidential primaries.
He believes that a contest between John Dramani Mahama, the NDC's likely 2024 flagbearer, and Vice President Bawumia would be advantageous for the opposition party.
"When you have people on the streets telling you that we want this fellow, it is a revolutionary time when we had the Rawlings. People think that Ken is the next Rawlings, so we will have quite the challenge in putting people together.
"What are you going to say about Ken. Ken says I am a job creator. Our people need hope and the message of hope has been trumpted by Ken Agyapong. Personally, I won't hide it. We have been a bit concerned.
"But I'm happy that the system is pushing for a candidate that would make it simple for us. I would wish that the NPP would overwhelmingly endorse Dr Bawumia today. I will personally celebrate."
Meanwhile, provisional results from the NPP primaries see Dr Bawumia in the lead position. But Kennedy Agyapong is currently giving the Vice President a run for his money.
