The Supreme Court has rejected an attempt to stop proceedings against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, dismissing a request to reverse her suspension and halt her potential removal.
The 3-2 majority decision came after Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, filed an interlocutory injunction, represented in court by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
Delivering the majority opinion, Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko voted to dismiss the injunction, while Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented.
The Court announced that it will release the full reasoning behind its ruling on May 21, 2025.
President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on April 22 after a prima facie case was established based on petitions submitted by Daniel Ofori, senior police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civic group Shining Stars of Ghana.
A five-member committee is now probing the allegations levelled against her.
Assafuah had initially sought the court’s intervention to prevent the petition from being sent to the Chief Justice for her response prior to its referral to the Council of State.
