The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has officially confirmed the loss of Private Bayou Roger, a member of the 5 Infantry Battalion, due to what appears to be an accidental discharge of his firearm.

The tragic incident occurred at the Base Ammunition Depot near Michel Camp in Accra.

According to the GAF's account of the incident, Private Roger, who was part of the platoon stationed at the Southern Command, was diligently carrying out his duties on the morning of Saturday, August 19th, when the unfortunate event transpired.

“Preliminary investigative report indicates that the soldier was seen sitting on his bed, waiting to believe his colleague at a duty post at 8 am when his rifle went off hitting him under his chin; killing him instantly,” a statement from GAF read.

The Armed Forces has indicated that a team from the Homicide Unit of the Gbetsele Police Station is collaborating with the Military Police to investigate the incident.

“GAF takes this opportunity to express its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends and loved ones of the deceased soldier,” the statement added.

In the interim, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.
