2 mins readSheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria Al Shoukry has been appointed as the new Chief Imam for the Ashanti Region, succeeding the late Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, who passed away on December 17, 2024, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

Sheikh Haroun had served the Muslim community in the region for 13 years.

Sheikh Al Shoukry’s appointment was approved by the Council of Ulama, the Council of Zongo Chiefs, and other elders, under the leadership of the Ghana Muslim Mission. His new role builds on his previous position as Deputy Chief Imam, a role he assumed 13 years ago.

As the Chief Imam, Sheikh Al Shoukry’s responsibilities extend beyond spiritual leadership to fostering unity and cooperation among the diverse Muslim community in the Ashanti Region.

At the appointment ceremony, held at the Islamic Senior High School, the National Chairman of the Ghana Muslim Mission, Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu, called on the new Chief Imam to prioritize inclusivity and unity.

“You will work to advance the interests of the Ghana Muslim Mission, uphold its values and objectives, contribute to the growth and development of Islam, and enhance the welfare of Muslims,” Sheikh Dr. Amin stated.

He also urged Sheikh Al Shoukry to transcend tribal, sectarian, and political divisions in his leadership, promoting fairness and respect for all Muslims.

“We are confident that your experience, wisdom, and leadership abilities make you the ideal candidate for this position. We look forward to working with you to promote the interests of the Ghana Muslim Mission and the Muslim community in Ghana,” he added.

Sheikh Al Shoukry expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and called on the Muslim community to rally behind him in his new role.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Alhaji Karim Grusah, and marked a significant moment for the Muslim community in the region.
