Ghanaian artiste and University of Ghana SRC President, Guru, has shed light on the unique challenges he faces as a celebrity student on campus, revealing why he often opts for a low-profile look when attending lectures.
Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, the rapper explained that being a public figure and a student leader comes with unexpected discomforts, especially in a setting like the University of Ghana, where celebrity status isn't always embraced within academic spaces.
To blend in and avoid constant attention from fellow students, the rapper disclosed that he often covers up when heading to lectures.
"Anytime I'm entering class, I'll be wearing my nose mask and my hoodie and don't even want to be seen. Because with that you won't be able to focus. But people will still recognise you. Anytime you're in class, some will be streaking you. It's a very uncomfortable position but you have no choice,” he noted.
Guru admitted that the early days of navigating student life were especially tough.
“In the beginning, I was feeling very uncomfortable. It was very difficult. It wasn’t easy. I’m entering class and everybody would be like, ah, who is he? And some would pretend like it is not you,” he recounted.
On whether he participates actively in class, Guru said most lecturers at the university do not compel students to contribute verbally during lectures.
“You see, one thing about Legon is they won’t force you to answer questions. You need to have a good rapport with the students so that they will at least be detailing the happenings. But in terms of answering questions, the lecturers won’t force it,” he said.“I was able to hide for almost like three years and no one knew I was on campus,” he added.
According to Guru, even some lecturers were unaware of his student status due to his consistently discreet appearance.
“Some of them didn’t know I was a student, especially the lecturers. I was able to keep my nose mask and my hoodie on with all these unexpected situations. Yet I was able to sail through. I wasn’t friends with the TAs, the teaching assistants. I decided to go the hardest way,” he shared.
Despite these hurdles, the rapper found creative ways to stay on top of his studies.
“I was able to identify some nerds. I was able to discover them. So anytime I face some difficulties, I tell them to come over. I have to do what I gotta do to make sure I get good grades 'cause I don’t want to finish and be attaining some pass or whatever,” he noted.“So I was making sure I was keeping up my GPA intact and that really contributed.”
Guru’s reflections offer a glimpse into the lesser-known pressures of being a public figure in a traditional academic environment. While the journey was not without its obstacles, he remains committed to striking a balance between his public image and academic aspirations.
