Ghana, a long-standing democratic nation in West Africa, holds a prominent role as a regional leader and a vital member of the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS.

In light of the growing wave of extra-constitutional movements and increasing political instability in sub-Saharan Africa, the United States and its partners are exploring strategies to offer the best possible support to Ghana and other established democracies in the region, with the aim of fostering and sustaining democracy as a governance model.

The discussions with President Nana Akufo-Addo at USIP will also delve into Ghana's crucial role as a regional leader in promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development. The meeting will address a range of topics, including Ghana's contributions to peace in West Africa, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and regional security matters in the Pacific Islands, among other subjects.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in his address, pointed out that the world was in turmoil, and “we are confronted with perilous situations”.

“Terrorism and violent extremism, climate change, food insecurity, political instability in parts of Africa, post-election violence, health pandemics energy crises, rising commodity prices, geo-political tensions, the conflicts in the Middle East, and the needless war in Ukraine, amongst others, have weakened the foundational pillars of multilateralism,” he lamented.

He argued that the world was operating in the most challenging and difficult of times.“The interlocking challenges and the convergence of crises we face post existential threats that require our immediate solidarity and collective actions,” he advised.
