A lecturer from Luton University's Department of African Studies has proposed that Ghana's ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) consider selecting a prominent figure like Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, as their running mate for the upcoming elections.
Dr. Effah Eghan believes that Wontumi's popularity extends beyond regional or ethnic boundaries, making him a potential catalyst for the NPP's victory.
Dr. Eghan emphasized that Ghana's political landscape has evolved significantly, with popularity and national acceptance playing a crucial role in determining political success. While acknowledging that his suggestion might be controversial to some, he urged people to objectively reflect on the idea.
"Chairman Wontumi and figures like him are now leading the political pack, wielding influence that can sway votes in favor of their parties," Dr. Effah argued.
Drawing on his expertise in African political dynamics and election studies, Dr. Effah highlighted Chairman Wontumi's significant impact across the country's social fabric since entering politics. He asserted that Wontumi's widespread popularity in both the northern and southern regions, along with his ability to connect with grassroots communities, make him an ideal candidate for the crucial role of NPP's running mate.
