The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the suspension of its ongoing nationwide “Thank You Tour” to focus on an upcoming demonstration scheduled for May 5, 2025.
The protest, called the “Save the Judiciary Demo,” is being organized by a coalition of five political parties in response to President John Mahama’s controversial decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
The parties believe the suspension is an attack on the independence of the judiciary, which they consider a vital part of Ghana’s democracy.
In an interview with Asaase News, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, explained that the party is treating the demonstration as a major national duty.
He said all party efforts will now be directed toward mobilizing for a strong turnout at the protest, aimed at showing firm opposition to what they describe as government interference in the judicial system.
“The party intends to suspend the tour so that all of us can be part of this important national exercise.
This is bigger than party lines — we are fighting for Ghanaians and the future of our democratic institutions,” Henry Nana Boakye told Asaase News.
Nana Boakye also highlighted the support from the Minority in Parliament for the planned demonstration.
“It is refreshing to note that the Minority in Parliament has also declared its support for the coalition’s demonstration.
The Minority Leader has expressed a strong commitment to the cause, and we believe this united front sends a clear message,” he noted.
