1 min readThe President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Frank Serebour, has clarified that no doctor working in the conflict-hit Bawku area has come under direct physical attack amid the renewed violence.

His comment comes in response to concerns raised over the safety of health workers, following reports that some had abandoned their posts for fear of being targeted. Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, April 15, Dr. Serebour acknowledged the fear among medical professionals but emphasized that none have been personally assaulted.

“Let me also clarify that, directly, no doctor has been targeted. We have not had any doctor specifically attacked, which offers us some comfort,” he said.

He assured that the safety of healthcare staff remains a top priority, adding that any medical worker whose life is under threat would be immediately evacuated from the area.

Despite the absence of direct attacks, Dr. Serebour disclosed that the growing tension has already led to the departure of at least ten medical professionals from the region.

The fresh wave of violence also claimed the lives of two police officers, who were reportedly shot and killed by armed assailants in Poyamirea, a community near Binduri in the Upper East Region.
