Nigerian actor Godwin Nnadieke is appealing for health safety on movie sets in Nollywood after surviving an unscripted kick in his chest by fellow actor Zubby Michael during a shoot.
He took to Instagram on May 23 to share a video of the incident with a caption calling on all his colleagues to prioritize each other's safety.
"...This isn’t to call anyone out, but it’s a serious reminder that we need to prioritize each other’s safety on set. During a scene, I received a kick to the chest from my colleague that wasn’t part of the script or directed by the director. Could be reflex, but it caused me serious pain," he shared. For a job that has made no provision for insurance policies or first aid, Godwin Nnadieke deems it best for colleague actors to own the state of their health every time on set to avoid dire consequences.
"When we’re working without insurance policies or readily available first aid, unexpected physical actions like this, even if accidental, can have real consequences."
The actor urged them to work within the demands of their scripts in order to avoid unforeseen circumstances that will jeopardize one's safety in the long run.
"Let us all commit to sticking to the script and ensuring everyone feels safe and respected. Every action on set, particularly physical ones, needs to be intentional and within the director’s vision."
"Please let us all look out for each other and ensure our sets are always safe spaces where everyone feels secure and protected. Because our health and safety are paramount." Godwin Nnadieke wrote.
To a similar effect, Nollywood actor Junior Pope Odonwodo, died in April while filming in Asaba, Delta State capital.
He died during a boat trip where the boat capsized and he, alongside two other yet-to-be-identified actors, drowned.
Actors have since been speaking out about Nollywood’s poor safety record and calling for change.
Actors Guild of Nigeria has also immediately called for safety standards to be implemented and observed.
