The Ghana Police Service has cautioned and granted bail to three individuals, including Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, following the discovery of a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition in their vehicle at the Electoral Commission's offices in Ofaakor, located in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region.
Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, has been cautioned on the charge of transferring firearms without authority. Meanwhile, Abdulai Aziz and Mustapha Mohammed have been cautioned for possessing firearms without authority.
The arrests, which occurred on June 7, 2024, led to significant unrest among NDC supporters, who gathered at the Cantonments Police Station demanding Naa Koryoo's release. This incident also attracted widespread condemnation, including from former President John Dramani Mahama and other NDC officials, who labeled the detention as politically motivated.
Additionally, the police have remanded Usman Haruna into custody in connection with the stabbing of the son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, during the disturbances at the Electoral Commission's office. Haruna is set to reappear in court on June 19, 2024.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC, has warned that the party will not tolerate such arrests in the future, emphasizing that no Ghanaian law should be used to intimidate or coerce citizens.
The police have stated that investigations are ongoing, and the case docket is being forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for review and advice.
