Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to support Ghanaian farmers with tractors and credit facilities to boost productivity and lower food prices.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Wa East, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the vital role of farming in ensuring food security and affordability.

He stressed that enhancing agricultural productivity is key to reducing food prices and committed to providing farmers with the necessary resources to increase their yields.

Dr. Bawumia drew comparisons with Brazil and China, noting that farmers in these countries produce 10 and 12 tons of maize per acre, respectively, whereas Ghana’s average yield is only four tons per acre.

To address this disparity, he pledged to introduce advanced farming techniques from Brazil and China to Ghanaian farmers.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to establish “super aggregators” who will buy produce directly from farmers, ensuring fair prices and reducing post-harvest losses.

He also emphasized the importance of using lime fertilizers to improve soil fertility, highlighting Ghana’s abundant lime deposits.

“I want to support our farmers. Farming is key to reducing food prices, and we will help farmers increase their productivity. In Brazil, maize yields can reach 10 tons per acre, and in China, 12 tons, but in Ghana, we only get four tons.

“We will apply the successful practices from Brazil and China to our farmers in the Wa East District to boost productivity.”

“We will establish super aggregators to buy produce from farmers, preventing waste and ensuring fair prices for their goods.

“We will also provide farmers with tractors and credit to aid in harvesting. Additionally, we will shift from using traditional fertilizers to lime, as lime significantly enhances soil fertility. Ghana has ample lime resources, and we will help our farmers utilize this resource effectively,” he said.
