The Minority in Parliament has extended a GHS200,000 donation to assist victims of the recent Kantamanto Market fire.
The blaze, which erupted on January 2, 2025, ravaged sections of the busy Accra market, leading to significant losses for numerous traders.
During a visit to the site on Tuesday, April 15, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking on behalf of the caucus, called on government to make use of the Contingency Fund to further support those affected.
“We appeal to the government to come to your aid. Recently, we approved the budget, and we are aware that the contingency fund is available to assist in times of crisis,” he said.
He also encouraged financial institutions to show compassion in their dealings with impacted traders.
“We also urge the companies from whom you have taken loans to consider the situation and reduce interest rates, giving traders some financial relief.”
Presenting the funds, Afenyo-Markin added, “This is GHS200,000, it is a modest contribution from us, the mighty minority, to support you.”
