Manchester United are reportedly engaged in discussions to secure the services of Bayern Munich's standout, Benjamin Pavard, who is being considered as a potential successor to Harry Maguire.
United's central defender, Maguire, is on the verge of moving to West Ham, with reports indicating that the two clubs have reached a preliminary agreement for a transfer fee of £30 million ($38.2 million) to facilitate his move to the London Stadium.
Bayern's right-back Pavard has expressed a desire to depart from the Bundesliga side, as he has no intention of renewing his contract, which expires in 2024.
According to information from Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, substantive discussions are taking place between Manchester United and the 27-year-old Pavard, who also possesses the ability to play in central defence.
Manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly eager to secure his inclusion.
United is purportedly aiming to offload Maguire and regain a portion of the £80 million ($101.9 million) they paid Leicester City in 2019—a world-record fee for a defender.
The addition of French World Cup champion Pavard would grant the Red Devils a versatile defensive alternative in the aftermath of Maguire's potential departure.
With just a year remaining on his contract, United might have the opportunity to secure Pavard's services at a reduced cost.
However, if Bayern acquires Harry Kane during this transfer window, the German club could seek a higher fee for Pavard.
United's Premier League campaign commences against Wolves on Monday, August 14.
The question of whether Pavard will join the club by then or if Maguire's departure will be confirmed remains unanswered.
