The Bretuo family and the Asante Mampong Traditional Council have officially informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the passing of the Paramount Chief of the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II in line with Ashanti traditional rites.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away last week after a brief illness.

He was installed as the Mamponghene on August 25, 1996, succeeding his direct uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II, who vacated the stool.

Known privately as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, Daasebre was born on December 31, 1939. He was a graduate of Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon.

Before becoming the Mamponghene, Daasebre served as the Registrar of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi and was also a lawyer by profession.

During his 26 years of leadership, Daasebre brought notable development to the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area and was celebrated for his ability to maintain peace and stability. He remains the only Paramount Chief since 1930 who ruled the area without encountering any chieftaincy disputes or legal battles.

Following tradition, the family and other local authorities, dressed in black attire, formally conveyed the news of his passing to the Asantehene and the Asantehemaa. The Queenmother of Mampong, Nana Agyakoma Difie, and the Queenmother of Ejisu, Yaa Asantewaa II, were part of the delegation.
