Portions of the Makola Market in the Greater Accra Region caught fire on Saturday, May 13, 2023.The structures in flames were those closer to the Ghana Commercial Bank.A team from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene to douse the flames.The cause of the fire is unknown as of the time this article was written.Also, the media is unable to confirm if there are any injuries or deaths.

A total of 2,403 fire incidents were recorded in the same period in 2022.In 2023, domestic fires led the chart with a total of 760, followed by bush fires, 492, commercial fires, 336, electrical fires, 208, vehicular fires, 178, refuse fires, 117, institutional fires, 76 and industrial fire outbreaks, 10.Out of the total fire incidents recorded within the period, 596 were doused by the public and 1,581 were extinguished by the GNFS.

Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Julius A. Kuunuor attributed the decrease in fire outbreaks to the intensive national fire safety education the Service had embarked on over the period.
