Former President John Dramani Mahama is set to deliver a keynote address at the Universities Studying Slavery (USS) Conference 2023, to be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The conference's central theme is "Slavery, Reparations, and Education: African Nova Scotia, Canada, and Beyond."
This conference serves as a significant platform for intellectual discourse, facilitating dialogue, and advancing research on the critical intersections of slavery, reparations, and education.
Mr. Mahama's role as a keynote speaker underscores his resolute commitment to addressing historical injustices and promoting equality. It also reflects his profound governance experience and in-depth understanding of the far-reaching effects of slavery on societies.
During his keynote presentation, Mr. Mahama will share his perspectives on the experiences and challenges confronted by individuals of African descent in their pursuit of justice, equality, and education.
He will leverage his extensive background to provide valuable insights into the social, economic, and political ramifications of slavery.
Additionally, he will discuss potential solutions and systemic changes required for meaningful reparations.
While in Halifax, Mr. Mahama is scheduled to hold meetings with Kim Brooks, the President of Dalhousie University, and engage with the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace, and Security.
Furthermore, he will visit the Black Cultural Centre and explore Africville, a former African Nova Scotian community that was dismantled in the 1960s to make way for industrial development.
The former president will also contribute his insights and visionary leadership during a breakfast event hosted by the Black Business Initiative, focusing on "Unlocking Economic Development through Youth Entrepreneurship."
