Director of Elections and Information Technology for Ghana's National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Omane Boamah has publicly accused the Electoral Commission of Ghana of providing inaccurate figures following the limited voters registration exercise.
Dr. Boamah took to social media to criticize the EC, claiming that they had misled Ghanaians with incorrect data.
Specifically, Dr. Omane Boamah pointed out discrepancies in the figures provided by the EC for Day 2 and Day 3 of the registration exercise.
He argued that the total registered should be 19,267 for Day 2, not 25,287, and 48,616 for Day 3, not 43,417.
Errors!!!Electoral Commission of Ghana, 19,267 must be the total registered NOT 25,287 for Day 2.Similarly Day 3 should be 48,616 and not 43,417.Who is adding the figures at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission of Ghana?#EagleEyes pic.twitter.com/cnZ1tLhgW0— Dr. Omane Boamah (@eomaneboamah) May 12, 2024
Responding to these accusations, the Electoral Commission admitted to errors in the initial data, particularly in the Upper East Region's figures.
The EC clarified that while 143,014 persons were registered overall, there were mistakes in specific regional tallies.
This disagreement over numbers has led to a dispute between the NDC and the Electoral Commission, with the NDC claiming that the actual figures are lower than what the commission has reported.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has been striving to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters across the country.
Chairperson Jean Mensa mentioned that they have taken measures like renting generators to deal with power cuts and implementing an "offline" mode for manual registrations in case of technical failures due to network challenges.
