The initiative, which was formally launched during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, is designed to create job opportunities for young Ghanaians, particularly in the international shipping industry.

However, Dr. Pelpuo upon assuming office, played a key role in completing the deployment process. He supervised the final arrangements, including issuing licenses and other approvals necessary for the beneficiaries to travel and begin work abroad.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony, Dr. Pelpuo assured the recruits that the government remains committed to supporting them throughout their stay and work in South Korea. He encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunity not only to improve their careers and earn competitive wages, but also to plan long-term investments back home, such as starting businesses or building homes.

The programme also aligns with the broader vision of former President John Dramani Mahama, whose government has placed strong emphasis on tackling youth unemployment. Creating jobs and empowering young people were key themes in Mahama’s 2024 campaign.
4
His manifesto included flagship initiatives like Agriculture for Jobs (AfJ) and Rapid Industrialization for Jobs (RIJ), which aim to boost agricultural productivity and drive industrial growth as a means of creating sustainable employment.
5
Through the Work Abroad Programme and other upcoming initiatives, the government hopes to provide more young Ghanaians with the opportunity to gain international work experience, develop new skills, and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
