The strike action by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) chapter of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has been suspended as of May 5.
This decision comes after a series of productive engagements with the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
On April 30, 2025, TEWU-GH had declared an indefinite strike, citing the exclusion of its members from the newly inaugurated governing council of KNUST. However, after meetings with GTEC, the union’s leadership has opted to suspend the industrial action.
Charles Arthur, Chairman of TEWU-GH, addressed the media at KNUST on May 5, explaining that both the local and national union executives were satisfied with the outcome of the discussions. The Director-General of GTEC had written to all Vice-Chancellors of public universities, instructing them to address the concerns raised by the union.
Arthur made a formal announcement, saying, “We have had meetings, and we have come to a conclusion, and that conclusion is that, today, 5th May 2025, we members of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana, KNUST local, and its leadership, suspend our strike action with immediate effect. Because of this, we urge all our members to go back to their offices and perform their duties.”
With the suspension of the strike, KNUST staff are now expected to resume their normal responsibilities, marking a resolution to the standoff between the union and the university's administration.
