2 mins readThe North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, has recounted a chilling experience during a visit to the Walewale Chief’s palace amidst growing unrest in the area. The violence, which has resulted in the tragic deaths of seven individuals and numerous injuries, stemmed from an attack on a bus that was later set ablaze.

In the midst of the chaos, Minister Tia was determined to manage the escalating situation. He had received news from the Ministry of the Interior about the imposition of a curfew in Walewale and surrounding areas. Understanding the gravity of the situation, he decided to brief the Walewale Chief on the matter. "I've just gotten word from the Ministry of Interior that a curfew would be imposed on Walewale and its environs. As such, I have to brief you [chief]. We tried, but this is where we are now. Let us still see how we can manage the curfew period and comply with it and get back and plead subsequently for its review," he explained.

The Minister’s day was initially focused on offering support to the victims of the unrest. After hearing about the tragic deaths and injuries, he visited the hospital to personally check on the injured and pay for their medical bills. Following that, he set out to pay condolences to the families of the deceased and offer his sympathy. However, his mission took an unexpected and dangerous turn.

While at the Chief’s palace, preparing to meet with the bereaved families, Minister Tia was attacked by a mob. "I was attacked at the Chief's palace. My vehicle was vandalized. I was held hostage for more than two hours," he recounted. The attack left him trapped and vulnerable, but fortunately, a combined force of military and police officers intervened and rescued him from the situation. "It was the combined military and police that came and rescued me, and I left," he added.

Despite the harrowing experience, Minister Tia remained resolute in his commitment to the people of Walewale, continuing to navigate the difficult situation with the hope of restoring peace and order.
