The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo, has revealed that he travels abroad in economy class to save costs because the Authority is cash-strapped.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Prof. Gyampo criticised what he described as a culture of "senseless entitlement" and "over-bloated self-importance" among many public officials. He said public service should be about sacrifice and discipline, not luxury and personal gain.
"I believe I am the only CEO at the moment who travels abroad with an economy class ticket. I do so because the Ghana Shippers Authority is cash-strapped, and every pesewa must be judiciously used to achieve our goals," he stated.
Prof. Gyampo noted that while public officials often insist on first-class or business-class travel, he sees no justification for such extravagance, especially in institutions struggling with limited resources. According to him, the focus must shift back to service, integrity, and responsible management of public funds.
He added that under his leadership, the Ghana Shippers Authority will prioritise accountability, efficiency, and value for money in all its operations.
"I want to lead by example. You cannot call for discipline among staff when you, as a leader, live lavishly at the expense of the people," Prof. Gyampo stressed.
He also hinted at broader reforms within the Authority aimed at cutting unnecessary spending, streamlining operations, and enhancing the institution’s role in supporting Ghana's shipping and logistics industry.
Prof. Gyampo, a political science professor and governance advocate, was appointed CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority earlier this year. His appointment was met with widespread interest, with many observers expecting him to bring a new wave of reform to the institution.
