The versatile media personality Deborah Vanessa, widely known as Sister Derby, has vehemently contested claims made by Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, who accused her of spreading misinformation about LGBTQ+ issues during a recent school visit.
In response to George's allegations, Sister Derby clarified that the video in question inaccurately portrays her interaction with children.Contrary to claims, she asserted that her purpose at the school was to discuss career options on Career Day, not to endorse LGBTQ+ ideologies.Venting her frustration on Twitter, she questioned the motives behind George's accusations, asking, "Who paid you?"
The controversy unfolded in the aftermath of parliament's approval of the Proper Human Rights and Family Values Bill, colloquially referred to as the anti-gay bill.A video surfaced on social media showcasing Deborah Vanessa's visit to Little Angels School.
During an interview on StarrFM, Sam George, a key proponent of the bill, asserted that Sister Derby had actively promoted LGBTQ+ activities during her visit to North Legon Little Angels school in Accra. He claimed that she conveyed to students that it was acceptable to have romantic feelings for the same sex.“I am absolutely not interested in the privacy of your bedroom. It is because these same people have taken what is their private perversion and are bringing it to my children’s classroom. North Legon Little Angles, I am mentioning the name of the school, they take somebody who calls herself an influencer and so called social media celebrity. Take her to a school to sit with children aged 8 to 11 and tell them that it is okay for them as boys to love boys and girls to love girls. Here in Ghana, North Legon Little Angels.”
Sister Derby defended herself, emphasizing that her purpose was to foster tolerance on Career Day, responding to children's inquiries in the presence of school authorities and via her Instagram Live. She condemned the allegations, asserting, “Who paid you? Teaching tolerance on Career Day, answering questions the children asked me in the presence of 8 school authorities and on my IG LIVE is now a crime? Shame on you.”
