Chelsea's forward Christopher Nkunku is facing an extended period on the sidelines as he is reportedly preparing to undergo knee surgery due to meniscus damage.
During Chelsea's final pre-season match against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago, the French international had to be substituted off in the 22nd minute following a challenge from Mat Hummels.
Initially, there were expectations that the £58 million ($73.9 million) summer signing from RB Leipzig would only be absent for a few weeks due to meniscus damage in his left knee.
However, recent reports from The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg suggest that Nkunku will require knee surgery, which will significantly delay his competitive debut for Chelsea in the new season.
While his absence is a setback for manager Mauricio Pochettino, the 25-year-old's impressive start with Chelsea has been promising. His inability to participate raises concerns about the team's attacking options.
Nkunku's extended absence adds pressure on Todd Boehly's team to strengthen their attacking midfield and second striker positions.
The club has been linked with Crystal Palace's Michael Olise, a winger who can also play in the attacking midfield role.
Additionally, there have been rumours of interest in Neymar, who reportedly expressed a desire to leave Paris Saint-Germain.
Given Chelsea's modest goal tally of 38 in 38 matches last season, bolstering their attacking options is crucial to mounting a more successful campaign this time and contending for a top-four position.
Chelsea is set to commence their 2023–24 league season at home against Liverpool under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp.
The hope is that Nkunku's return to the first team will be expedited as they aim to compete effectively.
