Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has convened an emergency meeting with the leadership of the Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions (COHHETI) across Ghana.
The high-level engagement focused on fostering deeper collaboration between the Ministry and stakeholders in the training of health professionals.
Discussions centered on challenges confronting health training institutions, the quality of health education, and strategic approaches to human resource development for the sector.
Hon. Akandoh stressed the need for continuous partnership and constructive dialogue to build a resilient and responsive healthcare system.
“The purpose of the meeting was also to collaborate, discuss concerns, and find practical solutions that would benefit not only the institutions but also the Ghanaian people who rely on the healthcare system,” he said, adding that such collaboration was essential to achieving lasting improvements in health service delivery.
President of COHHETI, Madam Margaret Mary Alacoque, expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it came at a crucial time. She brought attention to ongoing issues such as transportation difficulties, delays in accreditation processes, inadequate staffing, and poor service conditions in health training institutions. She also highlighted some innovative strategies that certain schools have adopted to enhance training delivery.
In response, Hon. Akandoh reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to work with stakeholders to address their concerns. He noted that measures were being put in place to improve follow-ups and institutional coordination.
He further disclosed upcoming reforms aimed at raising standards in health education while aligning with national health goals. These include reducing admission costs, rolling out an automatic code generation system for applicants, and clearly defining leadership roles within the health training institutions.
