2 mins readThe Government of Ghana is officially launching the One Million Coders Programme today, Wednesday, April 16, in a bid to position young Ghanaians for the digital economy through skills development in coding and digital technology.

The initiative will begin with a pilot phase across four regions—Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, and Upper East—bringing together over 500 participants from Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga for the inaugural ceremony.

The launch is taking place at the Kofi Annan ICT Centre.

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed that the government is in the final stages of negotiations with global tech giants Google and Amazon to provide tailored content and expertise for the programme.

“We’re almost done with an agreement with Google to run their program. We’re also talking to Amazon about that. And so these are all specialized courses and verticals that are going to come on stream,” he told journalists on Monday, April 14.

The One Million Coders Programme is designed to train one million youth across the country in critical digital skills that will make them competitive in emerging sectors such as business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO).

According to the minister, government has also entered into a strategic partnership with telecom company MTN to support the rollout of the programme.

Mr. George revealed that as part of MTN’s involvement, the company will establish its second Artificial Intelligence (AI) laboratory on the African continent in Ghana.

He said the move signifies Ghana’s growing prominence in the fields of AI and digital innovation.

“The decision to establish the second lab in Ghana underscores the nation’s growing influence in AI research and technological innovation,” he said.

Sam George further described the upcoming lab as a “center of excellence,” which will be pivotal in accelerating Ghana’s digital transformation by serving as a hub for collaboration between researchers, tech experts, and innovators.

Highlighting the broader vision, the Minister reaffirmed government’s strong commitment to creating a digitally-empowered generation.

He emphasized that the initiative is not only about job creation but also about building a resilient economy grounded in innovation and technology.
