The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has strongly criticized the assault on the medical superintendent of Bimbilla Hospital and has cautioned that medical services might be withdrawn if the safety of their members is not ensured.
This stern warning comes in the aftermath of an incident where the medical superintendent of Bimbilla Hospital, Adam Barhama, was forcefully removed from his office by enraged youth who protested against him.
The protesters demanded that both he and the hospital's accountant and administrator vacate the premises.
To guarantee their safety, the police provided an escort for the three individuals to Yendi.
Despite returning to the hospital on the same day, the medical superintendent faced another attempt by the youth to expel him.
In response to the situation, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North, Abdulai Yaqoub, has appealed for calm and urged the youth to exercise restraint.
In response to the events unfolding at the hospital, the GMA issued a statement expressing their stance: "The GMA vehemently denounces the unlawful actions of the local youth, which have jeopardised the safety of the Medical Superintendent, other staff members, and the security of hospital property.
The GMA is actively observing the situation at the facility and will provide suitable guidance to our members in due course. It is essential to underscore that if the continued threats and actions endangering lives and assets persist.
"We will be left with no choice but to ensure that no doctor returns to the facility either now or in the foreseeable future since their safety cannot be guaranteed”.
Bimbilla Hospital, situated in the Nanumba North Municipality within the Northern Region, has been prominently featured in recent news.
Due to non-payment of bills totaling over GH240,000, the hospital's water supply was disconnected. As a result, nurses at the hospital initiated a sit-down strike, causing patients to be redirected to alternative medical facilities.
The local youth reacted strongly to the situation and staged demonstrations against the hospital's management.
Their grievances centred primarily on allegations of mismanagement against the medical superintendent.
