Former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to suspend its ongoing “Thank You Tour” and rather focus on rebuilding the party following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, April 29, Mr. Mpiani described the tour as a “misplaced priority” and warned that it could deepen existing cracks within the party instead of healing them.
“There is a need to suspend the ‘Thank You’ tour,” he said. “What is happening is not good for the party. The NPP must take a step back, go indoors, and find a way out of this mess.”
According to Mr. Mpiani, the leadership of the party must prioritise introspection and internal reorganisation over public displays of gratitude. He believes this is the time for sober reflection rather than celebration.
While acknowledging that he is not part of the NPP’s National Council and thus may not know the full rationale behind the tour, Mr. Mpiani questioned its timing and relevance.
“Maybe if I had been there, I would have given them my advice earlier. But I can’t fault them without knowing the reasons behind the decision. Still, I believe it was the wrong move,” he said.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, began the nationwide tour as a means to thank party supporters and reignite hope following their landslide electoral loss. The party maintains the tour is part of broader efforts to rebuild momentum ahead of the 2028 elections.
However, the decision has sparked criticism, especially as the party has refused to release the findings of a 12-member committee led by former Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye. The committee was tasked with investigating the reasons behind the electoral loss.
For Mpiani, true rebuilding must begin with transparency and an honest evaluation of the party’s failings—not public tours.
“They should suspend the ongoing ‘Thank You’ tour, get back indoors, look at the issues, and find a better way to approach the members,” he advised.
