A devastating fire has ravaged makeshift wooden structures at Asokwa Old Town in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region, leaving numerous residents homeless.

According to Citi News, the fire is suspected to have originated from one of the structures and began spreading around 3:30 pm on Saturday, engulfing other wooden buildings in its path.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Rashid Nisawu, reported that they received a distress call at approximately 4:08 pm.

Responding promptly, four fire engines were dispatched to quell the flames, though the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire's intensity is attributed to the presence of highly combustible materials within the wooden structures. Unfortunately, residents who were away during the incident suffered complete losses, including monetary valuables.

While some onlookers managed to salvage a few belongings before the destruction, others arrived too late, watching helplessly as the fire consumed their properties.

One victim, Akolpuka Akolberi, a kenkey seller, recounted her harrowing experience, stating, “I overheard people alerting us about the fire, so I stopped what I was doing and rushed to my structure to get my belongings. The fire spread so fast, so I had to run out. My belongings, including cash, have been consumed by the fire,” she narrated.
