Some farmers in New Abirem in the Eastern Region have clashed with officials of mining giant Newmont Ghana Limited. The farmers were demonstrating on Tuesday over claims that the mining company has taken over their farmlands without paying them their royalties. Read: Okada riders clash with police in Ashaiman Reports indicated that the Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. It is, however, unknown why the Police fired the tear gas. The organiser of the demonstration, Kofi Deu Kyira told host of Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM, Don Kwabena Prah Jr. (The Don), Tuesday 16th October that five people have been left injured in the process. Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the area, Osei Frimpong said he is working hard to bring the situation under control.
