The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of jeopardizing Ghana's democracy through its actions during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
In an interview with the media on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, Asiedu Nketiah alleged that the EC failed to provide political parties' agents with the record of registered individuals before commencing the registration process, as required by procedure.
He emphasized that this omission meant that political parties had no means of verifying whether individuals had been registered prior to the official start of registration at the designated centers.
"You are coming to register voters, and we are requesting that you print out the data from the registration machines, so that we can ensure you are starting from scratch and haven't registered individuals without the parties' knowledge. Unfortunately, the EC has refused to do so. Consequently, we remain in the dark about whether people were registered before the official commencement of the registration exercise, leading to potential confusion," he stated.
The NDC's National Chairman also emphasized the importance of the EC learning from the experiences of countries like Cote d'Ivoire, where issues related to voter registration resulted in military takeovers.
In essence, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah expressed concern that the Electoral Commission's actions during the limited voter registration exercise posed a significant risk to Ghana's democracy, highlighting the importance of transparency and adherence to established procedures.
“They should go to Cote d'Ivoire and learn what led to the coup they experienced. The government refused to register just one person and this was what led to the coup. So, voter’s registration is not something to be joked with," he added.
