2 mins readThe Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is working to decongest the city through a variety of initiatives, including the creation of more satellite markets in the Central Business District.Some traders in the Central Business District set up shop and sell their wares on the side of the road, competing with vehicles for space.

Unauthorized trading on pavements is said to cause massive traffic and human congestion, however some vendors claim they have nowhere to go due to the current market's restricted size.According to KMA Mayor Samuel Pyne, the government's ambition is to transform Kumasi into a viable urban metropolis informed the need to create satellite markets.

“As part of efforts to make Kumasi a sustainable urban metropolis, we have the intention of developing satellite markets. Santase has become an old market and it has become prudent for us to modernize it,†he told Citinews.He said steps are underway, to ensure traders smoothly occupy the new market, while assuring that no trader will be left behind."We have systems in place and we are registering them.

Everybody will come with a document to prove this shop I'm operating is mine or for someone. We want to have the evidence. We are not going to leave anyone behind. It is going to be an all inclusive process where we do stakeholder engagements and ensure things are right.

â€Mr Pyne previously stated that the second phase of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project, which has been plagued by delays due to construction site congestion, will be completed in June 2024.There was also a sod cutting ceremony on May 2, 2019, to kick start the second phase of the €248 million complex, which was expected to be finished in 48 months.Source: The Independent Ghana
