2 mins readDeputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been named the new Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Her appointment comes as part of an ongoing restructuring effort led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno to strengthen the leadership of the service.
1
With this new role, DCOP Donkor will be responsible for overseeing major criminal investigations, including the high-profile murder case of Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, a dedicated Asante Kotoko fan.
2
Before her appointment, she was serving as the Head of the Security Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), where she played a key role in handling security-related matters within Ghanaian football. She had previously led investigations into Nana Pooley’s tragic murder, a case that placed her at odds with Asante Kotoko’s management.
3
During her inquiry, DCOP Donkor disputed claims that the incident took place inside the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, countering the club’s initial reports.
4
"This unfortunate incident did not occur inside the stadium; it happened outside. He was later picked up by a tricycle and dropped at a section of the stadium. I must clarify this, as there are comments suggesting the police allowed someone to enter the stadium with a knife. Let me state that the police enforce a strict search regime," she stated.
5
She further noted that if the victim had felt threatened, he should have alerted the police or someone nearby.
6
Her findings were met with strong opposition from Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC), with its chairman, Nana Apinkra, publicly expressing dissatisfaction with her handling of the case. He announced plans to escalate the matter to then-IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and called for her removal from the investigation.
7
"We will officially report DCOP Lydia Donkor to the IGP, and we want the GFA to remove her from the case because she was appointed by them," he stated in an executive meeting streamed live on YouTube.
8
Meanwhile, the main suspect in the case, identified as Brimah, remains on the run, as law enforcement continues its search to bring him to justice.
