Ghana is set to commence the issuance of chip-embedded passports starting Monday, April 28, 2025, as part of major reforms to strengthen document security and improve service delivery, according to Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The new e-passports, officially introduced on December 2, 2024, are designed with advanced biometric features and robust anti-fraud technology, aligning with global security protocols while reflecting Ghanaian heritage.
Each passport contains an embedded microchip that stores biometric and photographic data securely. Additionally, it incorporates multiple layers of visible and concealed security features to prevent forgery and identity theft.
These upgraded travel documents will replace the existing biometric passports, offering not only improved security but also a fresh aesthetic rooted in Ghana’s culture. The design proudly showcases traditional Adinkra symbols such as Fawohodie (symbolising freedom and independence) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (representing democracy and cooperation).
Speaking during a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, Mr. Ablakwa noted that the passport overhaul forms part of a broader initiative to modernise the system, eliminate middlemen, and ensure a transparent and user-friendly application process.
The rollout comes with additional reforms scheduled throughout 2025. These include round-the-clock passport processing, home and office delivery through courier services, electronic application tracking, and a 30% cut in processing fees.
While chip-embedded passports are already a standard in many parts of the world, Ghana’s version combines cutting-edge technology with national identity, reinforcing both security and pride.
