1 min readGraduates of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme (KEP) have opened up about their transformative journey, highlighting the profound impact of the initiative on their lives.Under the government-led programme, facilitated by the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), 22 former head porters, known as Kayayei, have been trained as professional bus drivers, offering them a pathway to financial stability and independence.

At a graduation ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia presented certificates to the newly qualified drivers. He commended their resilience and urged them to excel in their new roles.Speaking in a documentary released by NEIP, the beneficiaries reflected on their journey, sharing the challenges they faced during the training.

Many recalled how daunting it was to adapt to driving in a traditionally male-dominated profession. However, they expressed pride in their accomplishments, emphasizing the confidence and empowerment they gained through the programme.“This opportunity has given us independence and dignity,” one graduate shared, while others highlighted the programme’s potential to boost their earning capacity and open doors to stable employment.
