The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has demanded an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This demand follows Dr. Prempeh's controversial remarks about Ghana's first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
During a rally at the Kumasi Jubilee Park on July 9, Dr. Prempeh, also known as NAPO, declared, “No president since independence has developed Ghana more than President Akufo-Addo; not even your Kwame Nkrumah.”
This statement has sparked widespread criticism and public backlash.
Critics have questioned Dr. Prempeh's disregard for the advice of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to avoid actions that could cause regret for Dr. Bawumia in choosing him as his running mate.
Speaking on GhanAkoma, Nana Akwasi described the Energy Minister's comments as disrespectful and arrogant.
“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh failed to heed the advice of his uncle, the Asantehene, who is also the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom. During the event, I had indications that he paid his school fees. Despite being only three kilometers from the Manhyia Palace to the Jubilee Park, Dr. Prempeh reinforced the perception of his arrogance by disparaging Ghana’s first President in an arrogant posture,” Nana Akwasi remarked.
He further urged, “We ask that Dr. Muhammadu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh issue an unqualified apology to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the family of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, all former Presidents of Ghana, and the general public for the disrespect, impunity, and arrogance.”
