The perception that inmates at Nsawam Prison are exposed to harsh conditions may not be entirely true, as Ghanaian actress and social media personality Rosemond Brown, popularly known as Akupem Poloo shares a contrasting narrative.
In April 2021, she served a prison sentence for sharing nude photos of herself and his son on social media.
Sharing her prison experience with Andy Dosty on DayBreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the socialite revealed that she was kept in a cell which she compared to a boarding house, adding that daily routines continued as usual outside the cells with limited movement.
"We’re locked up by 5 pm every day, and we wake up early at 5 am to clean and tidy up our surroundings. Some inmates go out to work because we have farms, while others work inside. Since I was new, I wasn’t allowed outside, so I helped in the officers’ room and did weeding whenever necessary.
"After waking up, we brush our teeth and attend morning assembly, where we’re counted. It feels just like being in a boarding house," She told Andy Dosty in a video sighted by The Independent Ghana on Instagram.
She further revealed that they took their bath in a large bathroom, and they slept on student beds.
According to Akuapem Poloo, the ladies' block had 73 inmates, with 24 occupying each.
"Even when using the water closet, we clean it with Dettol. The women’s section is neat, unlike the men’s, which is very dirty," Poloo stated.
The socialite further disclosed that they were fed well with good food, even though they had it twice a day instead of 3.
"Breakfast is served in the morning — just koko, no tea. Lunch varies: we sometimes get yam with palava sauce or kenkey with a stew called “gas.” We’re not always fed three square meals; sometimes it’s just twice a day."
Despite the infringement on their freedom to move about, people of different faith were permitted to worship God on sundays and other preferable days.
"Church service is held only on Sundays, but Muslim inmates can worship or pray freely. The space is quite large — I was even twerking there," she added.
