Ghanaian musician Agbeshie has commended the Volta Region for building a strong music identity over the years, despite being overlooked by many mainstream artistes and industry players.
Speaking in an interview on Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, Agbeshie acknowledged that although the region had long been sidelined in terms of recognition and promotion, it has taken matters into its own hands, producing a wave of talented artistes who are now gaining attention and shaping the local music landscape.
“I can boldly tell you that, over time, the Volta Region has been isolated, or has been left aside in the way,” he said. “Over the years, the region has created their own superstars, trust me.”
Agbeshie believes the lack of engagement from big-name artistes in the country has only fueled the determination of the people in the Volta Region to support and grow their own talents. According to him, many well-known acts often exclude the region from their promotional tours, unaware of the untapped potential and vibrant market that exists there.
"The last time I checked, I went to Takoradi to promote my songs. Because I believe there are Ewes or whatever are there. So now the artistes that are, excuse me, A-list or big artistes here don't go to the Volta Region to do anything," he said. "So the masses are like, look, if you guys are not coming, no problem. We have our superstars here, we are gonna grow them, and they've grown them with time.”
He emphasized that the region has now reached a point where it can confidently celebrate its own musical heroes without relying heavily on outside support. Artistes like himself, who have consistently engaged with the region, are now reaping the fruits of loyalty and grassroots support.
“You can’t go to the North without Fancy Gadam and co. Our region has gone to that point where, no matter how big you think you are here, when you come to Volta Region, they no dey look you. They're waiting for Agbeshie because Agbeshie has been in their eyes and their minds over time,” he added.
Meanwhile, Agbeshie has released a new single titled Alakpato, featuring Chief Wan, as part of his continued efforts to keep the Volta sound alive and thriving.
