Samuel Atta Akyea, the lawyer for former National Signals Bureau boss, Kwabena Adu Boahene, says he will no longer hold private discussions with Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Samuel Atta Akyea made the announcement after a court hearing at the Accra High Court on Friday, 2 May.
He explained that his decision was influenced by recent events in the ongoing case and concerns about the current political climate, including fears that private conversations could be leaked or twisted for political reasons.
“I’m careful lest I have a phone conversation, and somebody says that, oh, I’m trying to romance the Attorney General. There’s a precedent, and I’ve been around long enough,” he said.
“I don’t want to talk to the Attorney General, although we are very good friends, lest somebody might misinterpret it, and somebody might even go and leak a tape, tying it to hobnobbing with the Attorney General for some advantage. That is why I’m very quiet about it.”
His remarks come after the court ordered Adu Boahene to remain in EOCO custody for seven working days. The case has been adjourned to 13 May.
When asked whether he had completely severed communication with Dr Ayine, Atta Akyea responded: “I believe so.”
“For now, I don’t believe I should be discussing anything with the Attorney General. And if there is anything he wants us to do outside of trial, maybe he should find a better way of doing it.
I’m scared that the kind of propaganda in the public space can put any kind of spin or interpretation on any engagement. So I’m very, very careful.”
Atta Akyea has previously criticised the prosecution of his client, describing it as unjust.
“That is a travesty of justice, playing with the liberty of the individual,” he told journalists outside the court.
