Ghana Health Service (GHS) has declared that the Greater Accra Region is now free from cholera after going 30 days without recording a single case.
The announcement was made at a media workshop focused on improving how cholera risks are reported in the region.
Speaking to JoyNews, Akumatey Tetteh, the Regional EPI Manager for Greater Accra, confirmed the development and said it marks a major step forward since the start of the year.
“I can confidently say that Greater Accra is cholera-free at the moment,” Tetteh stated.
During the first and second quarters of this year, the country recorded 151 cases and 10 deaths.
However, as of now, there have been no new cases. "Our surveillance shows zero reports of cholera, and we are safe for now.”
“We are aiming for zero cholera cases during this rainy season,” she said. “Achieving this goal requires a collective effort from the media, religious bodies, and various agencies. We do not want to return to the challenges we faced in November, December, and January,” she added.
In February, Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh, disclosed that Ghana recorded 719 confirmed cases of cholera and 49 deaths across five regions since the outbreak began in October 2024.
The other four regions are the Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions.
Mintah-Akandoh acknowledged the challenges posed by limited resources but emphasized the government's dedication to strengthening the healthcare system and prioritizing disease prevention.
