Former Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Bright Oduro (rtd), has noted that the Police will need to recruit 25,000 personnel to effectively manage the proposed 24-hour economy in Ghana.
The idea for the 24-hour economy has been put forward by former President John Dramani Mahama, who sees it as a potential solution to various challenges in the country, including the issue of unemployment, which has become increasingly concerning.
Mr. Oduro emphasized the importance of enhancing the Police force's staff strength to accommodate the demands of such a policy if it is implemented.
“It will require massive recruitment effort that will potentially bring the police population ratio which is now about one policeman to 800 citizens to 1 to 500 citizens or even better. An additional massive recruitment of 25,000 will be needed to top up the present police strength of about 42,000 and to make up the UN minimum ratio of 1 to 500," he said.
