2 mins readA report released by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service reveals that in July 2023, a total of 1,233 road crashes, involving 2,099 vehicles, were recorded.This resulted in 186 deaths, whereas 1,328 individuals sustained injuries during this period.There was a 4.31 percent increase in road crashes compared to the previous period. The report also noted a significant rise of 30.

When considering the broader timeframe from January to July 2023, a staggering total of 8,137 road traffic crashes were reported. These incidents involved a wide range of vehicles, including private, commercial, motorbikes/cycles, and others, totaling 13,862 vehicles. Tragically, these crashes resulted in 10,407 casualties, comprising 1,272 fatalities and 9,135 injuries.

<img alt="" class="wp-image-541119"/>The report reveals that out of the 1,233 reported road crashes in July this year, 54% (670) were classified as minor incidents, 33% (405) were categorized as severe crashes, and the remaining 13% (158) were tragically fatal crashes.

<img alt="" class="wp-image-541124"/>Similarly, when considering the cumulative data from January to July 2023, out of the 8,137 road traffic crashes reported, 54% (4,364) were minor crashes, 33% (2,713) were classified as serious crashes, and the remaining 13% (1,060) were fatal crashes.Concerningly, nine out of the sixteen regions experienced increases in road crashes during July 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

These increases were observed in the Upper East, Ahafo, Upper West, Volta, Central, Eastern, Bono, Western North, and Ashanti regions, with percentages ranging from 3.5% to a substantial 300%. However, the North East region reported no change, while the remaining regions recorded decreases. Remarkably, the Savannah Region had the highest percentage decrease, showing a significant reduction of 90%.

In summary, the data indicates a general increase in all major indicators for road crashes in July 2023, except for Pedestrian Knockdowns. Conversely, when examining the broader timeframe from January to July 2023 in comparison to the same period in 2022, reductions were observed in all major indicators, highlighting the need for continued efforts to improve road safety.
