Tensions erupted in Loagri, Yagaba/Kubori Constituency, as residents clashed with police over the custody of an alleged motorbike thief.
Fueled by frustration over increasing motorbike thefts, particularly on market days, the clash resulted in gunshots and ten reported injuries.
The incident unfolded when a suspect, already on the wanted list, attempted to steal a motorbike at the bustling market. Caught in the act, the alleged thief sought refuge in a nearby house, drawing the attention of angry residents eager for justice.
As residents demanded access to the house where the suspect sought refuge, the owner locked the door. Police, patrolling the market due to frequent theft problems, arrived to secure the stolen motorbike. However, they faced resistance from the crowd fearing the suspect's escape.
The situation escalated as residents and police clashed, with confusion over the police's actions. Residents questioned why the suspect wasn't immediately apprehended, leading to growing frustration. To disperse the crowd, police fired warning shots, and some residents responded by throwing stones, resulting in injuries to ten people.
The situation in Loagri remains tense, with injured individuals receiving medical attention, and an investigation into the incident is underway. The alleged motorbike thief is now in police custody.
