The funeral of Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur Beverly Afaglo is scheduled to take place in the United States (USA) Laurel, Maryland, on August 1, her family has announced.
They announced the arrangements during her one-week memorial service on May 30, in Tema and later clarified that the rites will not be held only in the US but also in Ghana, with Ghana’s slated for August 7, 7 August at Lashibi Funeral Home, Greater Accra Region.
According to the family, the Maryland ceremony is expected to host close relatives and members of the diaspora community.
The second and final phase of the funeral is scheduled to be held in Ghana on August 7, 2026, where the wider family, friends, and the public will participate in the concluding traditional ceremonies.
Why the USA?
According to the family, Beverly’s immediate relatives include her husband, Eugene Kwadwo Boadu Baah, popularly known as Choirmaster, a Ghanaian musician and former member of the music group Praye. Eugene, along with her sisters, is based in the country, making it culturally appropriate for mourning to begin within that community before the final burial rites in Ghana.
It is a common practice among members of the African diaspora to hold portions of funeral ceremonies abroad, allowing friends and loved ones who reside outside their home countries to participate in mourning and celebration of life.
Further details on the Ghana-based funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family in the coming days.
Death of Beverly
Beverly died on May. Afaglo died in Ghana on Sunday, 24 May, at the International Maritime Hospital in Tema after a two‑year battle with cancer. Her family and husband, musician Eugene Baah (Choirmaster), confirmed the news publicly the same day.
About her cancer battle
Her manager, Abu Iddris, disclosed during an interview with Ghana Weekend on Sunday, May 24, that,
“She’s been battling cancer for two years. It’s been a relentless war. She really fought hard, and this is where it ended,” he said.
He detailed that she had been checking occasionally due to her family history with cancer, as she lost her sister and father to same disease.
After some time, she developed breast cancer, which later spread to other parts of her body due to its genetic nature.
Her death was announced by her husband, in a social media post on Sunday, May 24, 2026. She was 42 years old.
Iddris disclosed that despite her deteriorating condition, Beverly remained committed to her career and family, even while undergoing treatment.
“In fact, we shot things for her while she was undergoing treatment. The premieres, the promotions, she was undergoing treatment. She lived while doing her very best until the cancer really overtook her,” he stated.
He further revealed that Beverly had travelled to the United States for treatment and was advised to remain there because of the advanced medical care available, but she chose to return to Ghana to spend time with her children.
“She chose to come be with her kids, knowing the situation. This is the kind of person she is. She chose to come see her kids and spend the last days with them at a cost,” he added.
